How to date Maison Martin Margiela
What do the circled numbers on a Margiela label mean — and what year is mine?
The blank label, the four stitches, the circled 0–23 grid: Margiela dating is a documented discipline, and every claim below is sourced. The era that matters runs 1988–2009 — the label tells you whether you're holding it.

1988–early 1990s: completely BLANK white label, attached by four white stitches visible from outside the garment at the back neck/waist. Season sometimes printed directly on the label ("COLLECTION PRINTEMPS ETE" / "AUTOMNE HIVER").

May 1997 onward: white label printed with numbers 0–23 in plain black type, the garment's line CIRCLED — 0 Artisanal (0 10 = men's Artisanal), 1 women's collection, 4 women's wardrobe (from 2004), 6 = MM6 diffusion (from 1997), 10 men's collection (from SS1999), 14 men's wardrobe (from 2005), 22 shoes. A circled number claimed for a year BEFORE that line existed is a fake or a relabel.

c.2001–2009: care/wash tag carries a code whose last digits encode year+season (documented for menswear lines 10/14) — the fastest honest dating check when present; wash tags are often cut or faded, which is why lookbook cross-reference matters.

"Martin Margiela" text appearing ON the label ≈ 2000–2001 only; MMM became "Maison Margiela" (no Martin) under Galliano from 2014 — a Galliano-era label on a claimed 90s piece is a mismatch.

Era sanity: Margiela-era = 1988–2009 (he was creatively disengaged by 2008, formally out December 2009). Anything after is post-Martin or Galliano era — a different collecting proposition; price and grade accordingly.

Sizing tell: the SS/AW2000 XXL pieces are tagged Italian size 74/78 — a "74" tag is a feature (La Mode du XXL), not a mistake.
Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
