How do I date Kapital — is there a label cipher at all?
There isn't one — no published product-code or tag-dating cipher exists, and that absence is the protocol: provenance and construction over labels, always. The C/K name boundary (year disputed), the Kiro era from 2002, the KOUNTRY factory line, the boro-is-homage truth, and the fakes ocean on the Japanese platforms — read honestly.

THE ABSENCE IS THE PROTOCOL: no published product-code or label-dating cipher exists for Kapital (community-confirmed). Provenance, construction quality, and the intricacy of the dyeing/distressing do the authenticating — never a tag lookup.

The one rough boundary: 'Capital' (C) labels predate the name change to KAPITAL (K) — but the change year is itself DISPUTED (1996 per kirikomade vs 2001 per Canoe Club, which ties it to Kiro's arrival). Treat C-label pieces as the pre-Kiro era and price on provenance.

The design boundary that matters more than any tag: Kiro Hirata (ex-45R designer) took over design in 2002 — the smiley (his hippie-culture homage, from 2002), the maximal patchwork, and the KOUNTRY aesthetic ARE the Kiro era. Toshikiyo ran production until his death (April 2024).
