How to date Rick Owens (the product-code watershed)

How do I date a Rick Owens piece — and does 'Olmar and Mirta' mean it's pre-2013?

The collection name is the key and it is never on the garment; the product code changed twice — pre-2013 'Olmar and Mirta' tags that hide the year, the legible 2013–2021 season code, and the post-2021 letter walk (A=2021 … E=2025). Plus the line codes that separate mainline from DRKSHDW at a glance.

The tells — 7, sourced

  1. 01

The collection NAME is the primary dating key, and it is NEVER printed on the garment. Owens names every season (SS98 MONSTERS → FW02 SPARROWS → FW06 DUSTULATOR → SS14 VICIOUS → SS16 CYCLOPS → SS24 PORTERVILLE → FW26 TOWER); to place a piece you read the product code's season/year and cross-reference the name against community/season records (r/Rickowens, the Truss Archive).

  2. 02

Pre-2013 tags: format '[LINE] [4-digit code] / [material] [4-digit colour]' — e.g. RU 2754 /G 0009 = mainline men's, cotton, black — and usually name the Italian factory 'Olmar and Mirta'. CRITICAL: a pre-2013 tag CANNOT give you the year, only the product code to cross-reference. 'Olmar and Mirta' present = pre-2013 mainline.

  3. 03

    2013–2021 tags: format '[LINE][YY][S/F][code]-[material][colour]' — e.g. RP15S5713-LGI 09 = mainline womenswear, SS2015 'Faun', glass-ice lambskin, black. S = Spring/Summer, F = Fall/Winter. The most legible era to date.

  4. 04

    Post-SS21 'Phlegethon' tags: format '[LINE][01 or 02][LETTER][code]'. 01 = SS, 02 = AW/FW; the letter walks the years — A = 2021, B = 2022, C = 2023, D = 2024, E = 2025.

  5. 05

Line codes decide tier and price: RU/RR (mainline men's), RP/RO (mainline women's), RF (mainline 'Forever', perennial current production) are top tier; DU/DS/U (DRKSHDW) is mid-tier diffusion; LI (Lilies) is women's diffusion; HU (Hunrod) is Michèle Lamy's jewellery. The commonest — and most punished — market error is a DRKSHDW piece sold as mainline. The code is on the tag.

  6. 06

Most-faked: the Ramones sneaker (never buy without authentication) and the triple-zip leather jacket. Authenticate by construction and provenance, not neck-tag typography alone.

  7. 07

Undervalued (community consensus, NOT auction-verified): pre-2013 womenswear (RP/RO) trades below its menswear equivalents; the Lilies (LI) line is the single most-undervalued tier — often below DRKSHDW despite being runway-adjacent. Do NOT pay vintage premiums for RF 'Forever' pieces — they are current production with no scarcity.

Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
