How to date Raf Simons

1. 01

   Era boundary first: the namesake 'Raf Simons' mainline ran 1995–2022 (he closed it in Nov 2022; final show SS2023 'Corps, Coda'), apex collecting window ~1998–2005. His work at Jil Sander (2005–2012), Christian Dior (2012–2015), Calvin Klein '205W39NYC' (2016–2018), and Prada (co-creative director, 2020–) is still Raf but a DIFFERENT house each time — a Dior-by-Raf or CK-by-Raf piece is its own category, never priced as namesake mainline.

2. 02

   The label-dating map — the DATED era is the collector's sweet spot: (1) AW1995–SS1998: plain 'RAF SIMONS' neck tag, NO year/season — date by runway cross-reference. (2) AW1998–AW2009: the year + season written in serif right next to the logo — the label tells you the season (the easiest, most-collected window). (3) AW2010–SS2013: year/season REMOVED again (undated) — date by reference imagery. (4) SS2014–AW2016: year/season moved to the CARE label, below the style code. (5) AW2017–SS2023: season/date on the WASH tag.

   The Archive Redux tell (THE original-vs-reissue skill): the word 'Archive' printed under the brand name on the care tag = a 2020 REISSUE, not an original. Raf reissued 100 archive pieces for the 25th anniversary (Dec 2020, 'Archive Redux'). No 'Archive' marking + a period-correct dated label = an original. Never pay original money for a Redux — the Redux is a marked reproduction. (Collector-authentication tell — Truss Archive + ARCHIVED.co — not a brand publication.)

4. 04

   Diffusion ≠ mainline: 'Raf by Raf Simons' (2005–2011, lower tier, lesser construction) and 'Raf Simons 1995' (2011–2013, whose neck tag has RED lettering with '1995' in blue beneath the brand) are diffusion lines — never mainline money, never archive.

5. 05

   Collection-title precision IS a dating check: 'Consumed' is SS2003 (NOT SS2002 — that season is 'Woe Onto Those Who Spit On The Fear Generation…', the KOLLAPS hoodie). 'Riot! Riot! Riot!' is AW2001 (not AW2000, which is 'Confusion'). A seller who mislabels the season is a flag on the piece and the provenance.

6. 06

   The most-faked (the Riot bomber, Consumed pieces, the Closer parka, the graphic knits): the community tell is neck-tag typography — replicas show crooked letters, specifically the 'C', the 'A' in RAF, and the 'O' in SIMONS; if the neck tag is gone, demand the wash tag. Treat as collector-lore, not proof — weight documented provenance heavily.

7. 07

   Provenance as authentication: a piece documented in the David Casavant Archive (the private reference library, founded 2014, that drove the whole Raf market by dressing Kanye, Rihanna, Travis Scott) carries real weight — Casavant/dealer provenance is the strongest non-tag signal on a heavily-faked piece.

Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
