How to date Off-White (the Virgil era)
Is my Off-White real — and which tag era is it from?
The ™-never-® rule, the four tag eras (white text → green MAIN LABEL → grey → illustrated), the embossed-text tell, and the zip tie that has to thread the loop. The Virgil era runs 2013–2021 and is faked at every price point — the tells, community-sourced and flagged as such.
The tells — 6, sourced
- 01
Authentication lore is community-sourced (LegitCheck) — treat as collector guidance, not gospel; on grail pieces demand provenance too.
- 02
THE SYMBOL RULE: 'Off-White' on a tag always carries ™, NEVER ® — a registered-trademark symbol is an instant fake. On early pieces, white stitching only: black stitching = fake.
- 03
Tag eras: pre-FW16 = white-text tags (SS15/FW14 bolder type, FW15/SS16 thinner; some pieces carry a secondary '℅ Virgil Abloh' tag). FW16 'CUT OFF' onward = the green MAIN LABEL ('defining the grey area between black and white as the colour Off-White ™'). FW20 = shift to grey tags, same rules. SS20 = the illustrated palm-and-face label (thin logo, off blue border, floating 'Main' text, or blue stitching = fake).
- 04
The green MAIN LABEL tell: authentic text is EMBOSSED with a rubbery texture — letters catch light and feel raised. Flat matte print = fake. Classic fake spacing error: 'whiteas' printed without the space; a ™ sitting too far from 'ABLOH' is another.
- 05
The zip tie: threads through the small loop next to the neck tag, never randomly through fabric. Authentic zip-tie text is thin with smooth teeth; overly thick boxy text and massive teeth = fake. On The Ten, the 'OFF-WHITE TM C/O NIKE' print must sit perfectly aligned.
- 06
Collabs authenticate against the PARTNER's standards too — a The Ten shoe is a Nike object first (tags, construction), Off-White marks second. Market note: the posthumous spike (Jordan 1 'Chicago' averaging $7,000+, one pair at $11,607 in Nov 2021 — platform data via Dazed) has corrected; don't pay peak-2021 prices for post-Virgil mainline.
Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
