How to date Marc Jacobs (Perry Ellis · Louis Vuitton · Heaven)

How do I date a Marc Jacobs–era Louis Vuitton — and is a 'grunge' piece real?

His most important work wears someone else's name. The Perry Ellis label tell, the LV date code that switched from months to weeks in 2007, Marc-by-Marc versus mainline, and dating Heaven by its collabs — the cross-house protocol.

The tells — 6, sourced

  1. 01

Era boundary first — Marc Jacobs's canon is scattered across houses, and each wears a different label: PERRY ELLIS (VP of women's design, 1988–1993), LOUIS VUITTON (artistic director, 1997–October 2013, where he built the house's first ready-to-wear), and his own MARC JACOBS (mainline from 1986) with MARC BY MARC JACOBS (diffusion, Spring 2001–2015) and HEAVEN by Marc Jacobs (from Sept 2020). A piece is only 'the grail' inside the right house-era — and his most important work wears someone else's name.

  2. 02

PERRY ELLIS SS1993 'Grunge' — the holy grail and a provenance puzzle: shown fall 1992, it got Jacobs fired and was NEVER PRODUCED — surviving pieces are runway SAMPLES only (Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain burned the ones sent to them). The critical tell: originals are labelled 'PERRY ELLIS', NOT 'Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis' — a 'Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis' label is a fake or a later repro. The 2018 'Redux Grunge' reissue is labelled 'Marc Jacobs', so it is never an original. Originals essentially never reach the market (the Met holds pieces); demand museum-grade provenance.

  3. 03

LOUIS VUITTON (Marc Jacobs era, 1997–2013) — date it by the LV date code, which changed format mid-era (collector-decoded via Fashionphile + Soldattire; corroborate): the 1990–2006 format is two factory letters + four digits, where the 1st & 3rd digits are the MONTH and the 2nd & 4th the year (e.g. 'SP0012' = France, Jan 2002); the 2007–2021 format keeps the shape but the 1st & 3rd digits are the WEEK of the year (01–52 — a week over 52 is a fake). Post-2021 LV uses an NFC chip, so ANY physical date code on a claimed post-2021 piece is counterfeit. Sprouse (2001) & Murakami (2003) sit in the month format; Prince (SS2008) & Kusama (2012) in the week format.

  4. 04

LOUIS VUITTON — the artist collabs are the MJ-era grails, each dated to its season: Stephen Sprouse graffiti (2001 — the first defacing of the monogram; a second neon Sprouse in 2009), Takashi Murakami Monogram Multicolore (from SS2003, the 13-year run — Cherry Blossom, Cerises, MOCA Hands — phased out 2015), Richard Prince 'Jokes'/'Nurses' (SS2008), Yayoi Kusama dots (2012). The Kusama trap: 2012 originals carry the physical week-format date code, the 2023 re-release uses an NFC chip — that is the tell between the two generations.

  5. 05

THE OWN LABEL — MARC BY MARC JACOBS (Spring 2001–2015) is diffusion, not mainline: the label reads 'Marc by Marc Jacobs' and it trades far cheaper, so the commonest resale mislabel is Marc-by-Marc sold as mainline — read the label text exactly. HEAVEN by Marc Jacobs (from Sept 2020, art-directed by Ava Nirui, the two-headed-bear logo) is non-seasonal, so date it by the COLLABORATION: Sofia Coppola / 'The Virgin Suicides' (Fall 2021), Deftones × Stray Rats (2023), Sandy Liang (Spring 2024). Note the Magda Archer and Cactus Plant Flea Market collabs (early 2020) were MAINLINE, not Heaven.

  6. 06

The market, honestly: mainline Marc Jacobs (mid-2000s–2010s RTW) is currently UNDERVALUED — a vintage boom is beginning but hasn't peaked, and Marc-by-Marc clothing is cheaper still; meanwhile the LV artist-collab bags (a Sprouse Speedy ~€2,500–5,000) have risen ~200%. What NOT to overpay for: a 'Redux Grunge' (2018) sold as an original Perry Ellis sample; a 2023 Kusama sold as a 2012 original (check the week-code vs the NFC chip); Marc-by-Marc sold as mainline; an outlet-line piece sold as runway.

Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
