How to date Louis Vuitton (the date-code cipher)
What does my Louis Vuitton date code mean — and does it prove anything?
The most-consulted dating layer in luxury, shipped with its true status: community-decoded, never published by the Maison. The era map (month-format 1990–2006, week-format 2007–2021, chips from ~March 2021), the not-proof rule that governs everything, the first-party Made-In truth (France, Spain, Italy, and Alvarado, Texas), and the Sprouse/Murakami revival traps.
The tells — 7, sourced
- 01
THE CIPHER'S STATUS FIRST: the entire date-code system is COMMUNITY-DECODED (Fashionphile/Rebag-tier specialist consensus) — the Maison never published it. Treat every line below as expert lore, not gospel.
- 02
The era map: pre-1980s = normally NO code (absence alone disqualifies nothing on vintage). Early 80s = 3–4 digit numerics. Mid/late 80s = factory letters join the numbers. 1990–2006 = two factory letters + four digits, digits 1+3 = MONTH, digits 2+4 = year (e.g. □□0946 = April 1996... read positions, not sequence). 2007–~March 2021 = same shape, digits 1+3 = WEEK of the year. ~March 2021 onward = NO stamped codes — embedded RFID chips replace them (community-dated boundary; chip data is proprietary).
- 03
THE NOT-PROOF RULE (governs everything): a correctly formatted date code NEVER establishes authenticity — counterfeiters print valid formats. The code helps date a real piece; it cannot bless a fake. On anything high-stakes, professional authentication remains required.
- 04
The chip-era contradiction tell: a claimed post-2021 production piece carrying a stamped date code is wrong on its face.
- 05
THE MADE-IN TRUTH (first-party): the house's own FAQ lists leather-goods production in France, Spain, Italy, and the United States (the Rochambeau Ranch — Alvarado, TEXAS). 'Not made in France = fake' fails for this house.
- 06
The revival traps: Sprouse 2009 tribute = the NEON palette (the SS2001 originals are not neon); Murakami 2025 = a multi-chapter RE-EDITION (Chapter One January, Cherry Blossom March 2025) vs the 2003–July 2015 originals — no universal physical tell separates original from revival; provenance and collection-specific attributes decide.
- 07
Era anchors for date-checking claims: ready-to-wear exists only from FW1998 (Marc Jacobs — no earlier LV RTW exists); Sprouse SS2001; Murakami Multicolore SS2003–July 2015; Jones menswear 2011–Jan 2018 (the Kapital boro SS13 and Supreme FW17 moments); Abloh March 2018–Nov 2021; Ghesquière womenswear Nov 2013–; Pharrell Feb 2023–. LV is reported the most-counterfeited luxury BRAND (2025) — but no authoritative most-faked-MODEL ranking exists; model-tier fake claims are community lore.
Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
