How to date Hedi Slimane (Dior Homme · Saint Laurent · Celine)

How do I date Hedi-era Dior Homme — and is 'CELINE' without the accent his?

Slimane renamed every house he ran, and each rename is the dating tell. The Dior Homme reference code, the silver-tag Van Assche boundary, 'SAINT LAURENT PARIS' all-caps, the dropped Céline accent — one designer, three rebrands, three protocols.

The tells — 7, sourced

  1. 01

Era boundary first: Slimane renamed every house he ran, and each rename IS the dating tell. Dior Homme is his menswear, AW2001–AW2007 — he renamed 'Christian Dior Monsieur' → 'Dior Homme' on arrival in 2000; debut AW2001 'Solitaire' (shown 28 Jan 2001); left July 2007, succeeded by Kris Van Assche. His later houses: Saint Laurent 2012–2016, Celine 2018–October 2024. A piece is only 'Hedi' inside those exact windows — everything else is a successor's house, priced apart.

  2. 02

DIOR HOMME — the reference code is the definitive tell (collector-decoded via r/hedislimane; corroborate with construction, not a brand publication): the care tag carries a code reading [year digit][season letter][H/F][item code]. Year = last digit (4 = 2004, 7 = 2007); season letter = E (Été / summer / SS) or H (Hiver / winter / AW); then H (Homme) or F (Femme / petite taille). So a code beginning '4EH…' = 2004 summer men's. In 2007 the format drops the third letter — a '7E' or '7H' with a single letter after the year digit is a final-season Hedi tell.

  3. 03

DIOR HOMME tag evolution (Hedi era): AW2001–AW2002 very wide tags; SS2003–AW2004 slimmed; AW2004 introduces the chain-neck tag; by SS2006 the tag grows much longer with the reference code on the FRONT; AW2007 is the last Hedi season. The post-Hedi tell: from AW2010 (Van Assche) pieces carry a long SILVER tag — a silver tag is NEVER Hedi. The trap: KVA kept using Hedi-style tags from SS2008 to SS2010, so a 'Hedi-style tag' alone doesn't prove Hedi — cross-reference the reference code and the season.

  4. 04

DIOR HOMME sizing is a feature, not a mistake: it runs extremely small — a tagged 50 wears like a 46–48, a 54 like a 50, and the armholes are cut brutally tight ('tight enough to take your blood pressure'). Genuine Large/XL is rare and commands a premium. A women's-cut 'petite taille' line exists, tagged F (Femme) at sizes like 38/40 instead of 48/50 — not a mislabel. Denim often carries NO reference code (so it can't be 100% season-dated); a second Japanese-language care tag or 'For Japan only' means market-specific care instructions, NOT a Japan exclusive.

  5. 05

SAINT LAURENT — the rename tell: from June 2012 Slimane renamed the ready-to-wear line 'SAINT LAURENT PARIS' (all-caps, sans-serif), reserving 'Yves Saint Laurent' for couture and claiming he was restoring Yves's own 1966 Rive Gauche branding. 'YVES SAINT LAURENT' on RTW = pre-Hedi. 'SAINT LAURENT PARIS' = Hedi (SS2013–SS2016) OR the Anthony Vaccarello era that followed — separate the two by the season code on the care tag (Hedi runs SS2013 through SS2016). Skinny jeans are the most-faked SLP piece.

  6. 06

CELINE — the accent is the absolute boundary (this interlocks with the Old Céline / Philo protocol): Phoebe Philo's house is 'CÉLINE' with the acute accent (2008–2018). Slimane DROPPED the accent to 'CELINE' on 2 September 2018 — every Hedi piece reads 'CELINE', no accent. Beware the double-negative trap: the accent was ALSO absent in the pre-2009 Michael Kors era, so 'CELINE' alone = Hedi (2018–2024) OR Kors (pre-2009). Disambiguate by tag shape/typography — Kors-era tags are square, Philo's are long thin rectangles, Hedi's use the 1960s-inspired modernist logotype. Hedi left Celine in October 2024; Michael Rider succeeded him (debut July 2025) — a Rider piece is not a Hedi piece.

  7. 07

The undervalued lane: the first YSL menswear stint (1996–2000, when Pierre Bergé installed Slimane and Tom Ford's Gucci-Group takeover pushed him out) is real Hedi and barely priced as such — his final YSL collection, AW2000-01 'Black Tie', already carried the skinny thesis. Do NOT confuse it with the Dior debut: 'Black Tie' is the YSL swan song, 'Solitaire' (AW2001) is the Dior Homme opener. What NOT to pay Hedi money for: post-Hedi Van Assche Dior Homme (the SS2008–SS2010 tag trap), SLP mislabeled by era, and fakes of the rock-era leathers.

Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
