How to date Gucci (the Michele era)

   Era boundary: Alessandro Michele's run is 2015–2022 (announced 20 January 2015; departure announced 23 November 2022). It sits BESIDE the Tom Ford era in this canon, not inside it — separate protocol, separate collecting proposition. Sabato De Sarno followed (January 2023 to 6 February 2025), then Demna from July 2025. Four hands in a decade: date the piece to the hand.

   THE QR GATE, READ FORWARD: the black fabric label with the encrypted QR code was introduced around 2014. Our Tom Ford protocol uses it to rule pieces OUT (any QR label = definitively post-Ford). For Michele the same boundary works in reverse — a 2015–2022 piece SHOULD carry it. It is an era gate, not an authentication: it dates a real piece and cannot bless a fake.

   THE NFC TRAP: Gucci's current Authenticity Tag is an NFC feature on SELECTED items only, surfacing product-identity and care information through the Gucci App. It is a CURRENT-production feature and cannot date or authenticate 2015–2022 stock. A seller invoking 'the Gucci authenticity chip' on a Michele-era piece is describing something that isn't there.

   NO UNIVERSAL CIPHER EXISTS for the 2015–2022 vintage — no Maison-issued QR, serial, label or packaging protocol was recoverable. Authentication here is construction, materials, period press and provenance. Anyone selling a definitive Michele-era authentication chart is selling their own guesswork.

   PRODUCT DATES ARE PRESS DATES, and each rests on a SINGLE period report: Dionysus = autumn 2015 (Vogue); Princetown fur-lined loafer = Fall 2015 (Vogue); GG Marmont = 'present in' Cruise 2016 accessory coverage (PurseBlog — the cautious formulation the evidence supports, not a launch date); Ace sneaker = the #24HourAce campaign, July 2016 (WWD — a CAMPAIGN date, not a design debut). Quote them as journalism, because that is what they are.

   The five-days legend is DISPUTED — do not repeat it as fact. WWD confirms the AW2015–16 men's collection was assembled in 'only a few days' and Michele describes a record-time remake, but Kering's own first statement credited the men's design and production teams, and i-D logged the specific five-day figure as unconfirmed rumour. The speed is real; the number is folklore.

   Collab naming precision: the Spring 2022 Balenciaga crossover in the Aria collection is the HACKER PROJECT — Kering and Gucci explicitly refused the word 'collaboration.' Calling it a collab misstates the house's own framing. adidas × Gucci appeared at the AW2022 Exquisite show, first drop 7 June 2022. Dapper Dan sequence is homage (Cruise 2018) → controversy → formal partnership; never collapse it.

   Season-boundary catch: the SS2023 'Twinsburg' collection (68 pairs of twins, two runways) was presented while Michele was STILL creative director, before the November 2022 exit. An SS2023 Twinsburg piece is a Michele piece.

   Market honesty — quote both halves: Vestiaire Collective reported Gucci leading its pre-loved sales in early 2025 with the Jackie and Marmont as top styles (ONE platform, one quarter, brand-level — not a Michele-era price thesis), while Gucci handbags have underperformed at auction as the wider luxury fervour cooled. No auction record anchors this era; any ceiling quoted for it is a community read.

Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
