How to date Balenciaga (the Ghesquière era)
How do I date a Balenciaga moto bag — and is mine really from the Ghesquière era?
The 'Balenciaga Paris' label ran unchanged through the Wang era, so the label dates nothing — the hardware does. The three moto-bag generations, the backward-walking tag letters (D = FW2003 → K = FW2012), the Lampo zipper tell, and chevre versus lambskin: the era, read like a jeweler.
The tells — 6, sourced
- 01
THE TRAP FIRST: the 'Balenciaga Paris' label ran UNCHANGED from the Ghesquière years straight through the Wang era — the label alone cannot date a piece to Ghesquière (1997–2012). Dating runs on hardware, leather, tag codes, and silhouette, never the label.
- 02
Tag letter codes (dealer-guide consensus — lovethatbag + Yoogi's agree): NO letter = pre-FW2003 (the earliest moto bags); then the letters walk BACKWARD through the alphabet, one per season — D = FW2003, C = SS2004, B = FW2004, A = SS2005, Z = FW2005, Y = SS2006, W = FW2006, V = SS2007, U = FW2007, T = SS2008, S = FW2008, R = SS2009, Q = FW2009, P = SS2010, O = FW2010, N = SS2011, M = FW2011, L = SS2012, K = FW2012 (the last Ghesquière season).
- 03
Hardware generations on the Lariat/moto bags: Gen 1 (2001–2004) flat brass 'thumbtack' hardware, rounded UNnotched rivets, chevre (goatskin); Gen 2 (2004–2007) Classic/Arena small antique brass, deeply notched rivets from FW2005, sans-serif tag font from FW2004; Gen 3 (2007–2012) Giant 21 hardware (large thimble studs, silver/gold/rose gold), lambskin from FW2007 (chevre discontinued SS2008). Giant 12 hardware = 2012 onward, effectively post-Ghesquière.
- 04
The zipper tell (dealer-guide consensus): era pieces carry Lampo zippers — the logo on the zipper-head back, embossed in italics and underlined. In 2014 that logo became an uppercase 'B' — any bag with the 'B' zipper-head is cleanly post-Ghesquière.
- 05
Leather reads: chevre (goatskin — lightweight, distressed, veiny) = 2001–SS2008, the coveted era; lambskin = FW2007 onward. The early chevre First and City bags are the grail lane ($800–$3,000+ by condition).
- 06
What not to pay for: Wang-era (2012–2015) bags sold as Ghesquière — same label, different hardware; any 'vintage' bag with the uppercase-B zipper; Demna-era pieces sold as archive. Undervalued (community read): pre-2005 ready-to-wear, made before the moto bag consumed the house's identity.
Two sources or it ships as rumor. Where a tell is collector-lore rather than a museum fact, the tell says so — weight it with construction and provenance, never alone.
